Bush likely to back weapons in space

Arms race feared over 'death stars' and 'rods from God'

Julian Borger in Washington
Thursday May 19, 2005
The Guardian

President George Bush is expected to issue a directive in the next few weeks giving the US air force a green light for the development of space weapons, potentially triggering a new global arms race, it was reported yesterday.

The new weapons being studied range from hunter-killer satellites to orbiting weapons using lasers, radio waves, or even dense metal tubes dropped from space by a weapon known as "Rods from God" on ground targets.

FBI, ATF address domestic terrorism

Officials: Extremists pose serious threat

From Terry Frieden

CNN

Wednesday, May 18, 2005 Posted: 10:24 PM EDT (0224 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Violent animal rights extremists and eco-terrorists now pose one of the most serious terrorism threats to the nation, top federal law enforcement officials said Wednesday.

Senior officials from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms (ATF) and Explosives told a Senate panel of their growing concern over these groups.

Of particular concern are the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) and the Earth Liberation Front (ELF).

John Lewis, the FBI's deputy assistant director for counterterrorism, said animal and environmental rights extremists have claimed credit for more than 1,200 criminal incidents since 1990. The FBI has 150 pending investigations associated with animal rights or eco-terrorist activities, and ATF officials say they have opened 58 investigations in the past six years related to violence attributed to the ELF and ALF.

Inhofe alleges PETA link

Senate Environment Committee Chairman James Inhofe estimated the cost of damages from militant environmental and animal rights supporters at more than $110 million in the past decade.

"Just like al Qaeda or any other terrorist movement, ELF and ALF cannot accomplish their goals without money, membership, and the media," the Republican senator from Oklahoma said.

Inhofe said there was "a growing network of support for extremists like ELF and ALF," and he singled out People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals for giving money to members of both groups.

PETA claims more than 800,000 members. Its president, Ingrid Newkirk, declined to appear at the hearing, but general counsel Jeffrey Kerr denied Inhofe's allegation in a written statement.

"PETA has no involvement with alleged ALF or ELF actions. PETA does not support terrorism. PETA does not support violence," Kerr said.

"In fact PETA exists to fight the terrorism and violence inflicted on billions of animals annually in the meat, dairy, experimentation, tobacco, fur, leather, and circus industries."

Happy Earth Day, Everyone!

We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.  ~Native American Proverb

A living planet is a much more complex metaphor for deity than just a bigger father with a bigger fist.  If an omniscient, all-powerful Dad ignores your prayers, it's taken personally.  Hear only silence long enough, and you start wondering about his power.  His fairness.  His very existence.  But if a world mother doesn't reply, Her excuse is simple.  She never claimed conceited omnipotence.  She has countless others clinging to her apron strings, including myriad species unable to speak for themselves.  To Her elder offspring She says - go raid the fridge.  Go play outside.  Go get a job.  Or, better yet, lend me a hand.  I have no time for idle whining.  ~David Brin

I hope this works, dragonswings_4u told me to use photobucket (thanks!!) to upload pics but I'm not sure if I've quite figured it out.

Anyway, piggybacking on his entry from several months ago about destruction in the name of progress...I work at a summer camp in my beloved North Carolina mountains, and on the road to it is a horse pasture that always gives me a sense of peace when I pass it. Well it's been bought and is now being made into an Ingles supermarket that will be finished by the fall (I'll take "after" pics then). It cuts straight through my heart to see the destruction. That which they call construction, progress. It makes me feel sick to my stomach.

Hello Everyone,

I have a Important story to tell

DEATH is all-around me I am surrounded by the destruction created by human needs, The area I live in is being destroyed and there is nothing I no anyone else can do about it (Legally). For the past 6 months the City Has been cutting down Beautiful 100 year old trees because they tear up the sewer systems with there powerful roots. As with any other event when human power is compromised we decided to eliminate the competition. I went out to day to go to the beach to take pictures for my wonderful wife and drove down my Old street NE 51st street in Fort Lauderdale the Devastation brought tears to my eyes and pain to my heart. I snapped some photos and wrote a few poems This is that work..

This is The last Tree on the Block, In the Neborhood.. The Last of its kind for miles. A hundred or more years of life destroyed in a few hours of chainsaw massacre.

What Next.. ?

Indication of climate change? [May. 29th, 2003|08:30 pm]

Are any of you familiar with the Periodical cicadas? In my area they are suposed to come out every 17 years as I am in the northern region of my particular state. The last time these critters emmerged was when I was 7 and I am turning 20 in under a month, which puts 13 years.. four years too early for my region. Could this be an indication of a climate band moving up?

If you ask me the fact that they are out now concerns me greatly.

Cross-posted to communities that I feel may be of service regarding my question.
